At HEXA’S USA, we are proud to support immigrants on their journey to U.S. citizenship. If you're preparing for your naturalization process, this guide will help you understand each step of the U.S. Citizenship Test. With the right preparation, patience, and guidance, your dream of becoming a U.S. citizen can become a reality!

Step 1: Determine Your Eligibility

Before applying, make sure you meet the basic eligibility requirements:

  • You must be a lawful permanent resident (Green Card holder) for at least 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen).

  • You must be at least 18 years old.

  • You must have continuous residence and physical presence in the U.S.

  • You should demonstrate good moral character and basic knowledge of English and U.S. civics.

Step 2: Complete Form N-400

File the Form N-400 (Application for Naturalization) online or by mail. You will need:

  • Your Green Card

  • Personal information, travel history, and employment history

  • Filing fee: $640 (plus $85 for biometrics)

Tip: Keep a copy of your application for your records.

Step 3: Attend Biometrics Appointment

Once your application is received, you’ll get a biometrics appointment notice. This appointment includes:

  • Fingerprinting

  • Photograph

  • Background check

Don’t miss this appointment! Reschedule if necessary.

Step 4: Prepare for the Interview and Tests

This is the most important stage—preparing for the interview, English test, and civics test.

  • English Test includes reading, writing, and speaking.

  • Civics Test includes questions on U.S. history, government, and civics. You must answer 6 out of 10 correctly.

At HEXA’S USA, we offer mock interviews, citizenship test prep classes, and practice quizzes to help you succeed!

Step 5: Attend the Interview

You’ll be interviewed by a USCIS officer who will:

  • Review your application

  • Test your English and civics knowledge

  • Ask you questions about your background

Bring all required documents: Green Card, state ID, passport, tax returns, and any other requested documents.

Step 6: Receive a Decision

After the interview, USCIS will issue one of three decisions:

  • Approved – You passed the interview and test.

  • Continued – More documents are needed, or a second interview is scheduled.

  • Denied – You didn’t meet one or more requirements.

If your case is continued, respond quickly to any requests.

Step 7: Take the Oath of Allegiance

Once approved, you’ll receive a notice for your Oath Ceremony. At the ceremony, you will:

  • Take the Oath of Allegiance

  • Receive your Certificate of Naturalization

Congratulations! You are now a U.S. citizen!
